During World War II Barse Miller was stationed in the Pacific Theatre where he illustrated for Life Magazine. During this period his works became increasingly modern showing spontaneous use of broad washes. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his watercolors during this period and gained national recognition. His watercolor portraits are rare although Miller is known to have painted several portraits in oil.
Base Miller was born in New York City, in 1904. A precocious youth, at age eleven, he began studies at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Henry Snell and Hugh Breckenridge. He also studied in Paris. From 1924 Miller taught drawing at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and painted murals for the WPA.
He joined the California Watercolor Society in the 20s and became known there for Los Angeles area scenes.
Following the war, he taught in New York at the Art Center School and Queens College but maintained a studio in Maine. He also made occasional trips back to California and in 1966 taught at the Rex Brandt Summer School.
He died in Mexico in 1973.
