Listed California Artist Clifford Silsby Abstract Mid Century Oil on CanvasOffering a wonderful Mid Century Modern abstract landscape or seascape painting by listed California artist Clifford Silsby (1896-1986) who is mostly known for beautiful Impressionist painting often depicting people picnicking in fields and along rivers in Southern France and California. This painting is much more abstract and I believe it was painted during his later years. While I cannot be certain, it appears... to depict a building or factory on a riverbank. The blue-green in the foreground appears to be water and there is a figure standing just this side of it, as if across the river from the building or factory in the background. The painting is in good condition given its age with no tears or bumps to the canvas although there are a couple of small areas of paint loss. I've tried to highlight these areas. Signed lower left. The painting measures 19 1/2" x 25 1/2" and is framed simply in a 24 1/2" x 30 1/2" gilt frame. It can be shipped with or without the frame. A painter and etcher, Clifford Silsby was born in New Haven, Connecticut and died in Los Angeles. He studied in Paris at the Academy Julian and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. For many years, he was a special effects artist for motion pictures in Hollywood and New York and lived primarily in California from 1912 to 1962. He was the adopted son of Wilson Silsby.
