This auction is for a late 19thcentury oil painting on canvas of a rare subject matter, a pair of AmericanWoodcocks on a forest floor, with one probing the soil for earthworms. The painting is generally on the darker side, as it should be considering the environs. Although there are no patches on the back, the painting looks like itmay have been professionally repaired and in-painted. Because of the darkness, it is hard todiscern but there looks to be a 3” tear repai...r in the lower left corner and inpaintingto the left of the rear end of the left woodcock.
