Vintage, rare, very large Federal/Regency style gilted bull's eye convex wall mirror with eagle. A few tiny dings and one barely noticeable scratch along the wooden rim, and some minor hazing of the mirror, but otherwise in very good condition. Measurements: 38 inches top to bottom and 22 inches across widest section. Mirror is about 19 inches in diameter. This pieces weighs 11 1/2 pounds. Ready to hang. This mirror i...s quite unique with its ornate hand-carved ornamentation around the centerpiece and the large impressive hand-carved black and gold eagle finial perched atop. Federal style mirrors combine the characteristics of European designs and are most often topped with eagles which had become a symbol of American independence and tenacity, this happened at the end of the 18th century. The balls around the perimeter of this mirror represent the original 13 colonies.
The hand-carved eagle on this is fully sculpted out, projecting in front of the plane of the mirror itself. A 3D effect that is quite dynamic and unique. Most other Federal mirrors will have eagles pretty much in line with the plane of the mirror.
