D&RGW Box Outfit KITCHEN car 04013 taken by John Maxwell in Alamosa Jan.18, 1946. This an excellent 8x10 full view of the 04013 printed from the original negative. Painted gray with speed lettering, this Kitchen car had been part of the Box Outfits that were used out of Durango. After WW II, with less use of the Box Outfits, this car which had a metal Murphy Roof was transferred to Alamosa and was used as a Sleeper for engine men in the Alamosa wreck train. Later ...this car was moved to Chama to serve as a Sleeper for the Chama engine hostler, the hostler was an engine man from Alamosa and would bunk in this car. This car was retired in the late 1950's and the carbody was sold. This Box Outfit was unusual in that it was numbered in the 27 foot 4000 series of cars, but was a 30 foot car and it had a metal roof, somewhat unusual for Box Outfits.
