Dating the fragment from that time would make this piece of pottery roughly 3, 000 years old. It's possible that it's from the prehistoric tribe of the Olmec but that can't be confirmed.
These pieces of pottery were known to be fertility pieces and were found in Tlatilco, Mexico, which is just north of Mexico City. Many were uncovered during archaeological digs and some were fo...und while digging dirt for bricks. These finds occurred before the government of Mexico banned the digging in those areas in the 1950's. This fragment is the head with definitive grooves at the top and at the bottom. There is the Hand Over the Mouth; the figural of the bent arm coming up to the chin. This gesture can mean many things and they all go back to ancient times. It may be censorship of your words, amazement at what just happened, or just a quiet gesture signifying to stay silent.
The backing is unmarked and tests positive for silver. The pottery fragment was most likely mounted to the back piece in Mexico around the 1970's as it holds that style and design of the time frame and locale. If you have any questions please feel free to ask, we're always around and would love to help you with your decision to purchase this piece of jewelry.
