Vintage 1983 Eddy Merckx Professional Campagnolo Record 57cm 56cm :De Rosa
Item History & Price
This is an actual barn find with full provenance. Bike was purchased locally (Healdsburg, CA) in 1983 from what is now Spoke Folk Bicycle Shop. Original owner took amazing care of it. He built several other bicycles that he rode, one of which he rode coast to coast 2 times (!). A true fanatic and talented watercolor artist. When he died in 2006, he had willed it to his buddy, a local building contractor who h...ung it in his barn for 10 years (it was too big for him really) until he sold it to me. Built with full Super Record other than the pedals which are Nuovo Record (steel cages). I date the frame based on online information on serial #, pantographs on the fork crown+seatstays. The cranks are stamped with a "3" in a circle denoting 1983 and the rear derailleur shows a PAT. 81 on the rear derailleur which is slightly anachronistic, but an excellent example without damage to the logo or pivot bolts.
Columbus SL/SP tubing, assembled in the Belgian factory that Eddy started with the help of Ugo De Rosa. Seat tube is 57cm c to c. top tube is 56cm c to c. Wheels are 32 hole sew up Nisi Montal box-section rims. There are no scratches through the grey anodizing on the display side of either wheel so if you see white in the photos on the rims display side, it is only a reflection. Bars are Cinelli Giro D'Italia 34-40 with a black anodized Cinelli 1A stem. Black real leather bar wrap and Leader leather seat with copper rivets complete the vintage feel of this bike. I have not attempted to retouch any of the paint, what chips were there originally remain. However, there is some evidence of spray retouches no doubt done by the orig. owner on the seat post lug and upper downtube in that area that usually the shifters rub/contact the frame. Some surface rust under the first (forward) rear brake cable braze on - very limited with a close up photo of the area.
No cost for local pickup in Santa Rosa, CA
