Original Description:
This lovely sewing machine by "Charles Raymond" is I believe, their 'household' model.Charles Raymond started manufacturing sewing machines in 1857. In 1859 he moved from Bristol, Connecticut to Brattleborough, Vermont then in 1861 to Montreal. In October 1861 Raymond established a factory at Yarmouth/Suffolk Street in Guelph, Ontario. The firm quickly expanded initially concentrating production on it's Family chain-stitch machine. In the early 1870's the Household lock-stitch sewing ...machine was introduced and later the Family No's 1, 2 and 3 shuttle machines were produced. The machine has retained some of its' original gilt decoration, however, the central beaver motif and name is intact an legible. The needle plate is still present and is stamped "Chas. Raymond, Pat. Apl 18 1872" and "E. S. Berg, Exeter".There are no cracks or splits to the cast metal body or wheel that I can find and for the most part the original black painted finish is still present, however, there are some patches of missing paint, particularly, to the edges of the base and the reel holder. The exposed metal areas have retained much their finish, but there are some surface blemishes. There are also the usual marks and scuffs that you would expect to a well used item of this age.I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. The machine turns well with a good smooth movement. The wooden handle has no cracks or splits. It measures approx 33 cm (13 inches) long by 17 cm (6 3/4 inches) at its widest.
