Tech Service and Repair
This Craig/IMA PS-1000 can do double or even triple duty! As a stand alone receiver with built-in stereo speakers, you can use it as an alarm clock, an AM/FM Multiplex radio or as a stereo 8 track tape player. Since it's a receiver it also has input jacks in the back so you can hook up a turntable, a CD player, another tape player/deck or even your smart phone! (with the proper cable purchased separately).
But you can also use it as a tape deck component and plug it into your stereo system as I did when creating the video demo you just watched. Built by Craig's IMA Division, the PS-1000 is a digital clock radio with alarm, AND an AM/FM Stereo radio, AND an 8 track stereo tape player, ALL IN ONE!
When I acquired this unit it had two very common issues for a tape player that sat in the closet for decades. The program change mechanism was temperamental and worked inconsistently and you could hear two songs at once (crosstalk) across the programs. If you watched the video demo, you know that I've corrected each of those issues and today this tape player is 100% functional.
In addition to those fixes each electronic and mechanical function was tested toensure it worked the way it was designed to. Any worn out electronic parts were replaced with better than original parts. Any broken and/orworn out mechanical parts were replaced from my extensive stock of used parts. Solder joints were inspected and redonewherever necessary. Moving parts such as the program change mechanism were disassembled and cleaned of decades worth of dirt, debris and partially solidified lube. These parts were then relubed with professionalproducts. I use Deoxit to improve performance and reliability.
Playback speed is accurate thanks to a few different things. The strong DC motor was cleaned and lubed. The motor spindle was cleaned and resurfaced. The flywheel was cleaned and resurfaced. Finally, I installed a brand new, (not "unused old stock") drive belt that is the proper size for this model.
One of the reasons for the excellent fidelity during playback is the condition of the play head. It's clean as a whistle without any scratches and has many more years of life left in it. The head is one of the reasons this unit delivers sound quality matching many of the biggest names in the electronics industry when you use it as a component input hooked up to your main stereo system as I did for the video demo you just watched.
To eliminate all the headaches from your listening experience, eachpotentiometer and switch was cleaned of dust and dirt to ensure optimal performance. Azimuth and headheight settings are now recalibrated to factory standards to prevent crosstalk(hearing two songs or channels at one time) on properly maintained tapes. The tape path is freshly demagnetizedfor the best sound quality.
This player has been extensivelyplay tested to ensure any inherent problem has been eliminated and to verifythat the player is now functioning at 100% whenever a properly maintained orreconditioned tape is played.
So What is a Properly Maintained or Reconditioned tape?
To enjoy your 8 track listeningexperience to the fullest extent, please make sure your tapes are properlyreconditioned before you play them inthis deck! If you don't properlyrecondition your tapes as described below your enjoyment will be less than itshould be. 8 track tapes arevery old! They stopped making them between1985 and 1990, so even the youngest ones are 30 years old! There are two partsyou should replace before you play any tape. The first is the "pressure pad" that holds the tape properlyagainst the head as it passes by. The secondis the silver foil strip that holds the two ends of the tape together. There are two typesof pressure pads. The best ones have twothin metal arms with felt pads on each flat end. The second type is a rectangular foamstrip topped with tape. I've found the first type holds up betteralthough sometimes one or both of the felt pads will fall off and needreplacing. The foam pad has probablyturned into dust by now. Go ahead and press downward on one and you'llsee what I mean. You'll likely hear crosstalk (two programs at once) ifyou play a tape with a foam pad in this condition. You can replaceeither type of pressure pad yourself or you can pay someone to do it. Search the Internet and you'll find lots offolks selling the parts/service you need. A tape deck has asensor built into the tape path. Whenthe silver foil strip on your tape passes it, the program change mechanismswitches to the next program. The glueon the underside of the foil strip is the only thing holding the two ends ofyour 8-track tape together. Once the old gluedries up the foil strip will separate leaving you with two ends of tape. If that happens inside your deck your tape islikely to be ruined. You'll find the silver tape you need to make new foilsplices where you find new pressure pads. Unplayed tapesstill in their original cellophane wrappers suffer the same fate! Remember, they're not really "new, " they're 30-50 year old"unused old stock". The pressure pad is in some degree of rot and the glue on the foilsplice is ready to give way!
Cosmetic Condition
One look through the pictures and you can tell this unit has been well taken care of. You won't find any massive areas where the veneer has peeled off or is in the process of doing that. The faceplate looks very much like new without all the nasty scratches you often find. All the original knobs and controls are present. The corners are all solid. I urge you to review the pictures and draw your own conclusions.
