One of the most celebrated of saints, St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) abandoned his early worldly life and renounced his inheritance to devote his life to Christ. He helped t...he poor, preached in the streets, and succored the sick, which soon attracted followers and led to his founding of the order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans) in 1209. His special gifts with birds and animals are legendary. In 1224 he received the stigmata while praying on Mt. Alvernia, a rare miracle among saints.
St. Francis of Assisi was canonized 1228, a mere two years after his death; his feast day is October 4. He is the patron of: animals, birds, families, merchants, against fire, against dying alone, Nambe pueblo, NM; and the dioceses of Santa Fe, NM; San Francisco, CA; and Lancaster, England.
