Original Description:
An exceptional large pair of the Imperial Guards for Hina Matsuri or Girl’s Day Festival in Japan.This pair is typical from the Meiji Period (1868-1912). They measure 12” tall and 9-10” wide.Because of their size we believe these dolls belonged to a wealthy Japanese family. Very fewJapanese families had room in their houses for a set of these large dolls. They are in good condition for their age. Heads and wooden hands are in perfect condition. Legs are somewhat loose and can be ...moved. One foot on young guard has broken toes. This is not noticeable when dolls are on display. They have glass eyes,  gofun layered faces and human or horse hair for wigs. TheirKimonos are paper covered with oxidized brocade. We bought these at an antique market in Japan in the mid 1980s, and have been displayed in our house ever since.
