Dragon/Man Motif Creamer & Sugar Set
This listing is for an amazing estate find; an incredibly detailed antique sterling silver and enamel creamer & sugar set, made by the world famous David-Andersen Company in Norway. Initially we thought the hallmark and design were Asian, but a helpful eBayer pointed out that the symbol is actually the stamp David Andersen used between 1888-1925!
David Andersen himself was known for his attention to... detail in all pieces made by either him or his company, and is known for having done Dragestil (Dragon Style) designs but they are incredibly rare. This is a museum quality piece!
We chose not to polish these pieces because it needs to be done by a professional in order to take care of the enameling; if you decide to have it done. We did scratch test both pieces in order to ensure they were sterling silver and they did test as such.
Both pieces feature an interlacing blue, green, white, and red enameled pattern around the center band. Above that is a band of white diamonds outlined in blue with red circles in the diamonds. The bottom band is a line of blue and white triangles with small green dots. There are also highly detailed curling legs that join the base of each piece with a design similar to a star. This is a lot of detail to be put on two small pieces of sterling hollow ware...and we are not even done.
The handles of both pieces are actually highly detailed dragons, the fins of which are enameled. They have tails, fins/wings, a scaled textured along their bodies, faces...and the faces are just as detailed as the rest. The all have fangs, and tongues that actually stick out (they fact the tongues haven't broken off is a miracle in itself).
While the sugar cup has two dragon handles (no lid, but we don't believe the set was made with a lid), the creamer has one dragon handle. Opposite that, from the side you would pour, is an amazing face of a bearded man wearing a crown. The bottom of his beard is enameled with green and black.
The sugar cup is a little over 2.5" from base to tip of handle, and 4.5" from dragon's back to dragon's back. The actual diameter of the piece is closer to 3" without all the embellishments. The underside is stamped with what now know to be the David-Andersen stamp design used from 1888-1925, "STERLING" and a stylized "S".
The creamer is almost 3.25" from base to tip of handle, and 4" from the spout to the dragon's back. The actual diameter of this one is closer to 2.5". The underside is stamped with the same David-Andersen hallmark, "925" and the same stylized "S".
