Fantastic electric blue color to these Chalcanthite crystals collected from Planet Mine in Arizona. This is a rare natural occurence of Chalcanthite. These Chalcanthite crystals formed post mining, formed as a by-product of copper mining upon mine shafts. Chalcanthite, meaning "coppe...r flower" in a loose translation from its Greek origin name, forms naturally in the secondary oxidation zones of copper deposits. Any sulfate rich ground water that might leach out copper from other copper minerals will crystallize as Chalcanthite when the water has evaporated. In many copper mines, Chalcanthite is an ongoing precipitate forming blue encrustations on the sides of the mine shafts. Chalcanthite can lose its color in sunlight and is water soluble, so do not let this piece get sunlight or get wet, and never feed it after midnight. Chalcanthite is known to be toxic, this specimen is for adult collectors and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
