Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:5162214 |
Species: Eucryptite, FluorapatiteLocality: Midnight Owl Mine, Independence Gulch, White Picacho District, Yavapai Co., ArizonaSize: Miniature - 4.1 x 2.8 x 2.1 cmWeight: 29.3 gNumber: 1454Details: Here is a very nice matrix piece of eucryptite, fluorescing a rich, clear cherry-red under shortwave UV, with a spot of gold-fluorescing fluorapatite and a few tiny grains of some green-fluorescing uranium mineral as a bonus. The name of the species c...omes from the ancient Greek word roots for well and hidden, because without the fluorescence eucryptite is very hard to identify, usually resembling massive feldspar, as is beautifully evident here. The Midnight Owl is a mineral-rich pegmatite locality, unusual among Arizona specimen producers.
NOTES ON ULTRAVIOLET:The higher quality the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Key factors include lamp wattage, UV spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. The photos here are taken using UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave, midwave, longwave-350) and Philips BLB (longwave-370) lamps, metered and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage.
