1755 American Beaver Token Betts-390
This is a very tough to get token with direct North American connection. It is listed as Betts-390. He describes is as follows:
Obv. LUD. XV. REX CHRISTIANISS. Under decollation f / m in script. Bust of Louis in lion's skin, to the right; hair tied with a bow.
Rev. NON VILIUS AUREO. In exergue, COL. FRANC, DE | LAM. 1755. (Not less valuable than the golden: i. e., the peltry of the beavers was not less to be desired than the go...lden fleece sought by Jason, to which the galley alludes.) Ancient galley, from the top of which hangs a beaver pelt.
Many out there barely show any details of this beaver, while others show no details at all, as this one is. Ours has nice brown color and surfaces with what appears to be a counterstamp on the reverse center. Being sold at an unbeatable price.
This token is one of the key North American issues from the 18th century struck during the French-Indian War that circulated in Canada and upstate New York.
