Ca1884 CAST IRON HORSE DRAWN PLEASURE CART / DOCTORS CARRIAGE By CARPENTER TOYS
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:5165 |
The beautiful horses are separately cast and pivot on a fulcrum between the tongues of the wagon with the horses’ rear legs resting on a crank between two small wheels - as the wheels turn the crank lifts the horses’ rear legs and then, as the toy continues to roll, the horses’ rear ends then drop by their own weight simulating a cantering motion. The bottom of the cart bed is cast with numerous patent dates from 1880 to 1884 and the wiffletree also features various patent dates.
Francis W. Carpenter of Port Chester, New York manufactured some of the most desirable American Cast-iron, horse-drawn vehicles from1880 to 1890. These Toys included what many collectors view as the creme de la creme of American cast Iron Toys - The Tally-Ho Coach. In 1890 Carpenter sold all patent rights and inventory to Pratt & Letchworth.
This wonderful, 1880’s Horse Drawn Pleasure Cart /Doctor's Wagon / Cart is in very good condition. There are no crack, breaks, chips or physical damage of any kind to the cast iron. The paint is worn and the interior of the Cart appears to have been overpainted a very long time ago. As stated above, the Wagon includes a separately cast, period but incorrect driver.
A very rare and very desirable, ca1884 Cast Iron, Horse Drawn Pleasure Cart / Doctor's Wagon by Carpenter and a fantastic addition to any Collection!!!
