Vintage 1958 Kiyoshi Saito Winter In Aizu 6 Japanese Woodblock Print In Frame

VINTAGE 1958 JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT
"WINTER IN AIZU (6)" BY KIYOSHI SAITO
Up for sale is an authentic Japanese woodblock print by Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997). The print is titled "Winter in Aizu (6)", the 6th image in his now famous landscape prints titled "Winter in Aizu" depicting snow-covered scenes of his hometown in the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan. Saito began the series in 1938 and continued it through 1994, with 132 different images based on this theme. The series... established his reputation as a printmaker in Japan and then internationally.
This woodblock print was created in 1958 and depicts a temple and several other snow-covered buildings in Aizu. It uses 3 colors: black, dark gray and brown. The white is created by the color of the paper. The image portion measures about 20 3/4" wide and 15" tall. I have not examined the print outside of the frame so I'm not sure of the total paper size (probably about 24" x 17.5", based on information from other sales descriptions). It's signed "Kiyoshi Saito" in the lower left image, beneath a red signature seal. The print is titled and dated in pencil in the bottom margin. It's printed on high quality paper and comes matted and framed. The wooden frame is painted silver and measures approximately 29 3/8" wide and 25" tall.
Kiyoshi Saito was one of the first artists of the Japanese Sosaku Hanga movement whose art became successful and was widely accepted and awarded by an international audience. He developed a technique and style of creating woodblock prints with a reduced color palette and simplified forms. Instead of elaborate carving and color refinement, he worked a lot with the grain pattern of the woodblock. Saito's works are known for their compositional clarity and artistic simplicity. The bold abstraction and spontaneous design give his work a special quality. Saito’s prints are self-drawn, self-carved and self-printed. Today, Saito is regarded as one of the great masters of modern Japanese printmaking after the end of the war in 1945.Condition of this Kyoshi Saito woodblock print is EXCELLENT. I don't see any noticeable toning or foxing. I did not remove the print from the frame, so I can't be certain how it is attached the matte or backing. The wooden frame is intact but has numerous places where the silver paint is worn or chipping. This valuable print deserves to be reframed in a nicer frame. Overall, this collectible Saito woodblock print looks great and displays beautifully. It would make a wonderful addition to any art collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase.
