Antique 19thc Large Copenhagen PIpsen Eneret Black Basalt Figure Group and Plinth “Ganymede and the Eagle” Thorvaldsen. Bertel Thorvaldsen sculptured theoriginal marble figure in 1817.In Greek mythology the boyGanymede was carried up into the sky, to the home of the gods on Olympus to bethe gods’ taster. According to legend it was Zeus, in the shape of an eagle, who took the beautiful boy from Phrygia in the north4.5 inches-western part ofAsia Minor (Turkey). &nbs...p;This beautiful rarely seen blackbasalt figure group of Ganymede and the eagle stands 7.25 inches high (18cms)on a base 8.5 inches by 3.25inches... The figure stands on a separate plinthbase 9.5 inches x 4.5 inches (25cms x 12cms) and the height is 4.5 inches. Intotal the figure group together with the plinth stands approx. 12inches (31cms)Fabulous modelling of nakedGanymede giving the eagle a drink. The figure group is in very goodcondition with just a small flat chip on the base rim. The plinth base however hasthree or four chips and a few scuffs.
