Very rare and wonderful, ca1880’s Cast Iron and Brass, Victorian Countertop Cigar Lighter with hand painted Bristol Glass Font, original burner and period shade. This outstanding, Cast Iron Cigar Lighter measures approx. 10 3/4” tall overall and 5” square at the base.
This Oil Lamp type Cigar Lighter features a cast iron base with original, black enamel surface paint. Affixed to the base are three brass mounts - a central mount for the font which is fl...anked by the brass tubes that hold the matching dips. The font features a thick, Bristol Glass sleeve this beautiful, hand painted floral decoration. At the top of the front there is a brass mount into which the original burner is screwed allowing it to be removed to fill the font with fluid. The burner retains its original collar and the Cigar Lighter is topped by an amber glass shade that appears to be original but is certainly period and NOT a replacement / reproduction. The Cigar Lighter retains both of its original brass dip sleeves and comes with a matched pair of replacement dips.
his wonderful, Oil Lamp type Cigar Lighter would remain lit throughout the day allowing customers at a Saloon or Tobacco Shop access to its flame for lighting their Cigars.
This rare and very attractive, Victorian Cigar Lighter is in very good to excellent condition with no breaks, cracks, alterations, repairs or damage of any kind. It retains approx. 80%+ of the original surface paint on the base and the hand painted decoration on the font is 100% intact with no wear or loss. All of the brass elements will polish up brightly if the next owner likes that look - we prefer the rich warm surface patina that those brass elements exhibit now. The period, amber glass shade is undamaged and overall the Cigar Lighter is exceptionally well preserved and displays beautifully. This type of Countertop Cigar Lighter would have graced the Bar in a 19th century Saloon or the Counter of a 19th century Tobacconist.
