Gorgeous art glass bowl created by Daum Brothers in Nancy, France in collaboration with Louis Majorelle. Daum and Louis Majorelle was a prominent 19th century designing collaboration. Majorelle was a French decorator and furniture designer who often worked with Daum, a French studio known for their glass and crystal work made using the pâte de verre method. Majorelle was highly regarded for his well-crafted woodwork, made using veneers, in the Art Nouveau style. Similar...ly, Daum was known for their attention to detail and elaborate Art Nouveau Designs. The French company was founded in 1878 by Jean Daum. It was later inherited by Jean’s two sons Antonin and Auguste at the turn of the 20th century, and the company began using more sophisticated manufacturing techniques, including etching, carving, and enameling, for which they later became famous. Born on September 26, 1859 in Toul, France, Majorelle was raised in Nancy, later studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He would return to Nancy where he took over his father’s furniture manufacturing firm. During this time, he began collaborating with the Daum brothers on a series of lamps deigns, which were later exhibited at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair. Majorelle relocated to Paris at the outbreak of World War I, but he nonetheless continued to collaborate with Daum on a number of glass and furniture designs. Majorelle died in 1926 in Nancy, France. Daum continues to produce crystal and glassware at their studio in Nancy.This deep dark mottled red glass bowl was blown into a hand-forged iron surround making the two inseparable. The bowl itself measures approx. 5 1/2" across the top by 2" high. Measuring across the forged iron handles it is about 7 1/4" wide. The glass is quite thick and heavy and has gold foil inclusions. It has etched marks on the bottom for both Daum Nancy (including the Lorraine Cross) and L. Majorelle. It weighs just about 1 lb. 12 oz. The bowl is in good condition and displays beautifully - especially if lit from below. It does have multiple "fleabites" along the outer rim, some of which are shown in the last photo above. These nicks are largely insignificant and most of them may have been created during the manufacture of this piece when the top of the rim was ground.THANKS FOR VIEWING OUR LISTING! SHIPPING: We are always happy to combine shipping on multiples items whenever it is safe to do so. We use plenty of quality packing materials so that your item(s) will arrive in the same condition as they left our shop. We do recycle/re-use clean, usable packing materials when possible. If your item arrives damaged in shipment (this almost never happens) please save all packing materials and take photos of the condition of the package as it arrived. We will refund your full purchase price including shipping costs as soon as we have the documentation needed for us to file a claim against the shipper.
