It has been some time since I have had a Strawberry shaped pipe, and then this magnificent pipe comes along and is as good as it gets! W.O. Larsen's highest Straight Grain affectionately known as the "Pearl" featuring the unknown man sitting in an armchair smoking away. While many of the Great Danes carved Straight Grains for Larsen, in my opinion Teddy Knudsen made the finest of them, the creme de la creme. Teddy was to me one of the most prolific carvers and a master at accentuating ...grain. It certainly shows here in this jaw dropping piece and I absolutely love the shape. It is as perfect of a Strawberry as you could ask for, some may even call Heart shaped. It sits extraordinarily comfortably in hand and features ultra thick walls with a concave "divot" opening to a very generous chamber. As the bowl tapers down and rounds out at the base, the position of the shank and transition could not be more complementary, almost as if to proudly display the Strawberry bowl. The shank is sturdy and round in a quarter bend and adorned with a lovely piece of Turkish Boxwood which holds the original vulcanite fancy facet fishtail stem. The finish is a warm and inviting medium stain like that of a Dunhill Root Briar and the Pearl grade was definitively earned here with the grain displaying truly spectacular fine angel hair straight grain wrapping 360 degrees and the depth it shows is incredible giving it a layered "3D" appearance. Clean throughout, this high grade is for the utmost discerning collector and not to be missed!
