On Front, the coin is Numbered in Red, “36 of 50.”Condition is Very Good to Excellent. Colors are beautiful.Measures approximately 1 and 3/4” across.Provenance: This ORIGINAL CHALLENGE COIN is from the private collection of my father-in-law, Evans E. Kerrigan, expert and noted author o...f many books on military medals, decorations and militaria, including “The Guidebook to US Medals, ” “American Medals and Decorations, ” and “American Badges and Insignia.” He was also a great collector, and student of military history, and a proud lifelong Marine who served multiple tours in the Korean War.HISTORY: A “challenge coin” may be a small coin or medallion, bearing an organization’s insignia or emblem and carried by the organization’s members. Traditionally, they might be given to prove membership when challenged and to enhance morale. In addition, they are also collected by service members and law enforcement personnel. Historically, challenge coins were presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit. They are also exchanged in recognition of visits to an organization.
