Up for auction is a beautiful example of the rich ores produced in the East Tintic Mining District! This sample consists largely of bright metallic Enargite contained within a quartzite matrix! This mine was another example of the rich yet sometimes short-lived operations that chased the brecciated ore zones for rich gold-silver ores, and measures approximately 8.2 cm by 7.9 cm by 3.6 cm, and displays beautifully! You won't see material from this mine that often, and with the recently ...activity in the East Tintics, it is unlikely that you will see many samples from this district as a whole.
The Apex Standard Mine was first claimed in 1917 following the discovery of the rich ores of the Tintic Standard Mine, and from 1918 to 1919 the shaft was sunk to 900 feet on the property. In 1923, the Apex Standard No. 2 shaft was initiated by the Chief Consolidated Mining Company and sunk to a depth of 1, 150 feet, and mining of siliceous-barite gold ores persisted until 1936, at which point the mine was idled. The ore body had a maximum width of approximately 50 feet, and a maximum thickness of 12 feet, and consisted of pyrite, enargite, galena, argentite, and hessite.
