PIPE:  FACE-EFFIGY, CANTON, ILLINOIS AREAHeight:  2 ¾”Base-Width:  2”Weight:  5.1 ozThis astonishing, FACE-EFFIGYstone pipe came out of 19th century plowed field not far from theIllinois city of Canton in Fulton County. The pipe is a faceresting atop a 7-sided base.The smoke hole isthe top of the effigy’s head while the mouth hole is flush against one of the frontsides.  This type of pipe necessitated areed stem inserted into the mouth hole.Minor soilabr...asion scratches, stone pitting and rim dings.  But in relatively very good condition.The form/style ofthis unique effigy pipe suggests it is from the Mississippian period, or around900 A.D. or so.  During that time and foraround 500 more years, extensive settlements were built in the region, alwaysnear flowing rivers.A unique and specialpipe that elicits all sorts of questions as to why this culture found itimportant to represent faces on their pipes!
