This beautifully carved oak was part of a frieze from the first-class Smoking Room of White Star’s Britannic of 1914, sister ship to the Olympic and the Titanic. Similar to what was found in the first-class staircases on her sister ships, the detail on this carving was altered slightly on Britannic to reflect the changing styles, and this carving has a more Art Nouveau feel to it in the details. Many of Britannic’s interiors were completed, and some were installed befor...e she became a hospital ship. The items that had not been installed in the Smoking Room eventually found its way into the Billingham Arms in the UK.
A few years ago, the Billingham Arms was torn down, and all of this Britannic wood was thrown in a dumpster. Fortunately, a local resident found it and saved what he could. It is remarkable that the woodwork survived at all, and much of what was saved is now in private collections. Measures about 25″ x 5″. Please see photos for exact condition.
