This is a rare Sampson Mordan Silver 1899 Novelty Ink Well In Form Of A Lidded Cauldron.
I have not been able to find similar anywhere so intended use might be something else.

Fully hallmarked Sampson Mordan London 1899.
Wooden lid with cork fitting.
Measures 50mm tall excluding the lid.
Some wear to SM&Co hallmark itself but SM clearly visible, rest of hallmark clear.
Some small dinks around the pot.
The wooden lid has some damage as shown.
