Vintage Original Oil Painting - Chinese LadyThis portrait of a Chinese lady is done mostly in tones of jade green forming almost a halo around her head. It is oil on canvas, and was likely painted in the mid 1900s. The signature is James Calder, and I can find very little about him, although there is mention of a Michigan artist by that name. I believe this was purchased from the Detroit Institute of Art. They're a world-class museum, and years ago they us...ed to have a rent-to-own department from which my mother used to borrow, then buy original paintings which were usually by Michigan artists. I don't have paperwork to document this, but I think that was the case here. This painting hung in our family home since the 1960s. It always reminds me of an Asian Mona Lisa! Frame - rustic rubbed wood frame was always meant to look aged. It's peeling a bit, has a few chips at back corners, but looks like that's how it was supposed to be.
