ORIGINAL- LZ-55 ZEPPELIN SHOT DOWN DURING SALONIKA CAMPAIGN PHOTO POSTCARD RPPC May 5, 1916 the German Army Zeppelin LZ-55 made a bombing attack on Thessaloniki (Salonica, Greece) harbour. Part way through it was caught in spotlights and all the ships in the area opened fire with their anti-aircraft guns. LZ-55 continued its attack but HMS Agamemnon 12-pounder anti-aircraft gun hit LZ 55 breaking it in half according to one of ...the crew. The airship crashed in the swamps at the mouth of the Vardar River west of Thessaloniki and its crew were captured. The crash site soon became a tourist attraction. The metal structure of the Zeppelin was dragged by allied soldiers from the swamps to the White Tower of Thessaloniki to be reconstructed so that Allied engineers could study how the Germans built airships. Please note the large spherical bombs being used in the bombing of the harbor that were taken from the Zeppelin in the last picture in this listing.Very fine condition.Well focused with very good contrast. French Greek caption on the lower right corner in the negative.Original French language message nicely written in fountain pen on the reverse dated December 23, 1916 with mention of the debris of the Zeppelin on the obverse.------------------------------------------------------------------(please see pictures)THIS IS NOT A COPY OR A REPRODUCTION.PLEASE SEE MY 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND BUY WITH CONFIDENCE* Salonica front (Oct 21, 1915 – Sep 30, 1918) also known as the Macedonian front, was a military theatre of World War I formed as a result of an attempt by the Allied Powers to aid Serbia, in the fall of 1915, against the combined attack of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria.
