Thisis a decorated leaf from a Pontifical that was produced in Franceprobably during the third quarter of the 12th.Century.Thetext here is from the Office of Ordination and include the benedictions at the ordination of a Sub-Deacon. It is written in asuperb gothic script which begins above the top ruled line.Theleaf is not illuminated (there is no gold or silver) but it isdecorated with one large initial (with two small leaves within thebody of it) and three smaller initials, all in r...ed. Space has beenleft for a further large initial on the verso but it has not beencompleted.Allthe prickings remain and a guide letter for the large initial hasbeen provided in black in the outside margins beyond the prickings.Thesize of the leaf is 265mm x 181mm (10 4/10ins. x 7 1/10ins.).Leaves fromPontificals are only infrequently offered for sale. Whilst not thecase here, Pontificals are often the grandest of medieval servicebooks in that they comprise the offices, rituals and benedictionsthat can only be conducted by a bishop.Whilstnot illuminated, andit is unfortunate that the decoration has not been completed, there are elements to the leaf that can enable itsdate and origin to be reasonably determined. The date of thirdquarter of the twelfth century is suggested because of the text beingwritten above the top line , the diphthong “ae” still being shownas an “e” with cedilla, and there being little or no “biting”of the letters.Pleasebe aware of the condition of this item. What you can see in thepicturesis what the winning bidder will receive. Thisis a superb leaf with very little in the way of age related wear. Paymentby Paypal please.
