Mounting traces show slightly. <><::><>BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THEHONORABLE  Lord Kilbrackenin later lifeJohn Arthur Godley, 1st Baron Kilbracken, GCB (17 June 1847 – 27 June1932), was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat and British civil servantand the longest serving, and probably the most influential, Permanent Under-Secretary of State for India.He was the only son of John Robert Godley, a colonial reformer, and Charlotte Godley, a letter-writer and community leader.Having studied at Radley, Rugby, and Balliol College, Oxford (where he won the Gaisford Prizefor Greek Verse), his first important role was acting as Assistant PrivateSecretary to William Ewart Gladstone, then Prime Minister, during the years 1872to 1874. He was elected a fellow of Hertford College, Oxfordfor the period 1874 to 1881. In 1880 Godley was appointed Commissioner for Inland Revenue, a position he held till 1882. Appointed Under-Secretary of State at the IndiaOffice in 1883, he remained there for 26 years, retiring in 1909. On 8 December1909 he was raised to the peerage as The Baron Kilbracken, of Killegar in the County ofLeitrim.His autobiography, Reminiscences of Lord Kilbracken, was published in1931, the year before he died. He was succeeded in the Barony by his eldest andonly surviving son, Hugh. Lord Kilbracken was a first cousin of the classical scholar A. D. Godley.

Hon. William E. Gladstone between 1872 and 1874.2 Hewas a Fellow between 1874 and 1881 at Hertford College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He was Private Secretary to Rt. Hon. William E.Gladstone between 1880 and 1882.2 He held the office of Commissioner of InlandRevenue between 1882 and 1883.2 He held the office of Permanent-Under-Secretaryof the India Office between 1883 and 1909.2 He was admitted to Lincoln's Innentitled to practice as a barrister.2 He was created 1st Baron Kilbracken, ofKillegar, co.
