Retablo“Horse Racer Gives Thanks for Win” Original Folk Art Mexican Ex-Voto Painting This retablois a handmade painting – an original piece of Mexican folk art. The artist tellsa story of thanks in words and picture. It is all hand painted directly ontothe tin.Thanksto the Virgin of the Light: (loosely translated) “Duringthe race on July 7, 1977, in Huehuetoca, I prayed to the Virgin of Light with alot of enthusiasm. Then my good friend Julian made a mistake with his horsealmos...t at the end. It gave me the opportunity to win. s/ Leobardo Dias.” Thepainting features two men racing their horses. The brown horse is just aboutcrossing the finish line. The fields are in the background.TheVirgin of the Light is painted on top, looking down on the scene. The tinis painted in bright colors and the painting is done in a primitive style. The tinsign measures just about 13-1/2 inches across x 10-1/2 inches in height. This is an original piece of artwork, bought from theartist's family in Mexico. The date of creation is not known as theartists who do this type of work sometimes use a historic date to show contextfor the scene created. Sometimes the artists and their families hold on toworks for many years before making them available for sale so it is impossibleto say when it was created. Sometimes they make available pieces as theyare created.This is an original piece of artwork, bought from theartist's representative in Mexico. Thepiece of tin used is not rigid. There may be light and camera shadows showingin the photo of the back of the tin.
