SUPERB & UNUSUAL c.1750-70s SPITALFIELDS GOLD FLORAL SILK DAMASK PANELATT. TO ANNA MARIA GARTHWAITEFrom Dress - Open Robe or Robe á l´anglaise
DESCRIPTION:  Place of origin: Spitalfields, London -England (made, designed)Date: c.1750-70Artist/Maker: Unknown (production) - Attributed to Anna Maria GarthwaiteMaterials and Techniques: Woven silk damaskProvenance: Important European PrivateCollection, Paris (France)
This regal and exceptional mid 18th century lady´s Robe à l´anglaisegold Spitalfields silk damask panel dates from c.1750-70, was acquired someyears ago from a Fine Antique Costume and Textiles Private Collection fromParis, and it is attributed to English textile designer Anna MariaGarthwaite,  one of the most prodigious and talented silk designersever. *Thisfragment was acquired along another stunning crimson damask panel which wasdisplayed with this in the former collection, both measuring the same width, showing the same selvedges,  andattributed to Mrs. Garthwaite. The crimson silk damask is available apart andlisted at our ebay store and studio for your consideration.
The fragment was taken from the original gown andit has arrived to our hands as its original owner left it in the mid 1700s. Elegantfabrics like this exhibited wealth and taste in the 18th century.In this period, textiles and clothing were a form of investment that could besold readily for cash if necessary or gifted to the church. This silk was a significant investment.
What a color! The panel is made of a wonderfuland unusual soft gold damask or damassé silk figured textile in two shades: lighterfor the textured and raised pattern and darker on the background. The damaskcatches the light perfectly. Woven as a dress silk, its sophistication and refinementwould have been evident when fashioned into a “Robe á l´anglaise”.
The bizarre pattern design is repeated 3 timesalong the width with large scrolls filled with a variety of lovely flowers, themore striking, the clovers! Branches with leaves, tulips, poppies and ivyembellishes the scrolls. This damask it is similar to Mrs Charles Willing gown, a lady from Philadelphia, who was painted by Robert Feke in 1746wearing a gown of English silk damask woven to a surviving 1743 design by AnnaMaria Garthwaite. *SEE PICTURE OF THE PAINTING.
Unlined.
It is quite difficult to find a 18thcentury Spitalfields silk damask fragment in such great condition and in thisso rare and unique soft gold color. The lady who owned this must had been verywealthy to acquire and wear such expensive silk made for the export market, andprobably designed by such a prestigious textile artist.
This is truly a rare and wonderful piece ofearly textile art. It needs to be carefully preserved by storing flat and awayfrom sunlight, insects and humidity. Would look great framed. * Please, study the photos as these form part ofour description. If you need additional pictures, we will be pleased to providemore.
* Photographed in natural light, there is a small variance in colors fromcomputer screens and lighting situations. CONDITION: Very Good for an example that´salmost 300 years old. The silk is strong and clean, a little dry and even stiffwhich confers the textile with durability and stabilization. If you take thetextile in hand and lift it against the daylight, you can notice some kind of frayinghere and there but no holes or rips. 2 little holes and slight tearing near theselvedges. These “damages” are natural due to age, rather than to use or badpreservation. The surface on this sublime damask resembles a fine thin antique Chinesepaper, all carefully and skilfully hand painted with the finest strokes, andwhen lifted against the light, one can see both its beauty and the effects ofthe passage of time. There are several age rust spots stains, not too big, nottoo bad. Overall very good condition. Nothing that detract from its beauty andrarity.MEASURES: LONG: 23.3” (60 cm): WIDTH: 10 ½” (27 cm)
