This fine sterling silver scallop shell-shaped dish has 4 hallmarks - 1. a small letter t and a crown (1839 Sheffield, England) 2. The head of William IV 3. J.W & E.H. in a square (John Waterhouse and Edward Hatfield Co.) 4. The Lion Passant (British Sterling Silver). The dish, which is superbly detailed in every way, measures 5 3/4" wide x 5 1/2" long. It is about 2" deep and weighs 5.11 ounces. Three nicely formed periwinkle feet are an added refin...ement not usually found on the average sterling shell dish cast at that time. I have sold many sterling silver and pewter pieces from the Early 19th century - this is the first piece I have found with absolutely no dents or damage on it. Condition is excellent. INTERESTING NOTE: The Sheffield date mark on this is definitely 1839 - the monarch duty mark is definitely that of William IV, however, William IV died in 1837, Queen Victoria was crowned in 1838. The head of Queen Victoria should be the duty mark on this. Was the silversmith trying to make a statement by using the proper date mark, but not the queen's head? Perhaps a British silver expert out there can explain this mystery to me! NOTE - I HAVE BEEN SELLING ON EBAY SINCE 1999 AND STAND BEHIND ALL MY ITEMS.
