This November 2, 1767 issue was published five years before the British Government would force Goddard to close up shop and move to Maryland and this particular issue contains GREAT Maryland content as well, with an inside-page report on the arrest of Patriot printer William Depriest for printing 80, 000L ($3.4 million today) in Maryland currency.At the time it was illegal to print money in the colonies, but after a 1765 plea from Revolutionary Patrick Henry asking Virginia to begin printing its own money, Depriest, who was fiercely anti-British, began printing the Maryland bills.He was arrested and thrown in jail in Frederick. Fearing Patriot friends might try to free him, he was moved to Annapolis where he died in jail awaiting trial in 1768, a martyr to the Revolutionary cause.Depriest’s letter to his wife after his arrest sits in the Maryland Archives today.Very Good condition.
