Original Description:
This musket barrel is an 1842 French Model found on the Perryville Battlefield.  It's in great condition.  The barrel measures 36 inches which is 4 inches shorter than the normal 40 inches.  It may have been cut down for cavalry service or a soldier accidently dropped the musket, bent the end, then had it cut off. I've seen many barrels missing a few inches.  Has the rear block site.  The barrel has many typical Confederate Roman numerals used for matching part...s.  A peep site was added in the modification.  The big E marking may be for St. Etienne, France.  Imported for the Civil War by the Union in very small numbers, but much larger numbers by the Confederacy.  Used much more early in the war as weapons became available.  Perryville was fought in October, 1862.  A nice example of Confederate weaponry from a large western battle.
