Beautiful vintage Zhostovo lacquer painted black tray features red, white and blue handpainted flowers with bright green leaves. The rim is painted with gold detail. Zhostovo is a world renowned style of painting on metaltrays that originated in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Flowers have becomesynonymous with their art form. Arranged into bouquets, wreaths or garlands, they form the centerpiece to the majority of the trays. Studying the forms andstructure of flowers, each artist i...s intimately aware of the flora they paint, but deliberately mix in unrealistic elements of fantasy to embellish theircreations. The Zhostovo craftsmen all work in a constant balance, seekingalways to combine traditional methods and themes with improvisation and theindividual flare of each master. They use no stenciling or guidelines. Eachtray is a one off, similar in style but always different to ones before it.The tray measures 7 3/4 x 6 3/4. It's in good shape overall, but does have a spot of discoloration on one of the flower petals. There are light scratches on the surface and heavier scratches on the reverse. Believed to be from the 1970s.
