Very rare and fascinating, ca1881 Gutta Percha / Thremoplastic Handle Quack Medical Device / Hair and Body Brush known as “Dr Scott's Electric Flesh Brush” - guaranteed to cure just about anything that ails you!!
This beautiful, molded Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic Brush measures approx. 5 1/4” by 2 3/4” by 2” tall. It features a very heavy, Gutta Percha handle with an image of the arm of an armored Knight holding bolts of lightning at the top and a... British style coat of arms at the bottom. Text between the two images reads “Electric” and text surrounding the coat of arms reads “The Germ of All Life is Electricity”.
This beautiful though rather strange Brush was patented in 1881 by one George A. Scott of New York City. Contemporary advertising touted “Dr. Scott’s Electric Flesh Brush” as a “Amazing Cure” for a wide range of ailments. An advertisement in the September 17, 1881 issue of Scientific American read in part: “Dr Scott's Electric Flesh Brush - It cures Rheumatism, Sciatica, Gout, Nervous Debility, Lumbago, Neuralgia, Toothache, Malaria, Lameness, all Pains and Aches resulting from Colds, Impure Blood and Impaired Circulation. It acts quickly in Stomach, Liver and Kidney Troubles, and is a valuable assistant in their Treatment. It quickly removes those "Back Aches"peculiar to LADIES.”.
Not sure how much this thing cost but I’ll take two!!!
This outstanding, ca1881 Gutta Percha / Thremoplastic Handle Quack Medical Device / Hair and Body Brush is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, breaks, repairs of other physical damage to the Gutta Percha. The “electric” bristles are also well preserved with three small tufts missing but otherwise complete – soft and supple and ready to go to work curing a Toothache or Liver Trouble (maybe there is a way it can cure both at the same time – sorry – it does not come with instructions!!
