Up for your collection is a vintage genuine Year 1972 polished chrome Zippo lighter, featuring inscribed CAN THO 1972 VIETNAM and a US Army MACV-SOG logo in the front. Inscription in the back reads: NO HOPE WITHOUT DOPE LET'S GET HIGH. This original Zippo lighter has a solid hinge, strong spring cam with good snap, the top and bottom line up nicely. Matching Zippo insert sparks with a clear flint tube, flint wheel turns properly...in excellent work...ing condition. Pictures show details of this Zippo which has some minor scratches. A rare item from my 40+ years collection of Vietnam War zippo lighters.
Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) was a highly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam war. Established on 24 January 1964, the unit conducted strategic reconnaissance missions in Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), Laos, and Cambodia; carried out the capture of enemy prisoners, rescued downed pilots, and conducted rescue operations to retrieve prisoners of war throughout Southeast Asia; and conducted clandestine agent team activities and psychological operations. MACV-SOG participated in most of the significant campaigns of the Vietnam War, including the Gulf of Tonkin incident which precipitated American involvement, Operation Steel Tiger, Operation Tiger Hound, the Tet Offensive 1968, Operation Commando Hunt, the Cambodian Campaign, Operation Lam Son 719, and the Easter Offensive. In March of 1971, MACV-SOG created Task Force I Advisory Element (TF1AE) to replace its three field commands CCN, CCC, and CCS. This task force was located at Da Nang.
