AN ORIGINAL, TWO-SIDED ANTIQUE ANDEAN CATHOLIC RELIQUARY
IN SILVER MOUNTInventory Number: TM7950 Origin: Andean Region, South America -- including Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Perú. Background and Description: This offer consists of a very attractive and captivating Catholic reliquary pendant (medallón relicario) of antique age. This is a two-sided reliquary within an oval frame of fine silver and ...covered with thick glass. Serrated bezels, embellished with hand-twisted wire around the periphery, hold the glass and painted metal plates in place. The silver content tests at .925 Sterling (yellowish cream color with nitric acid and potassium dichromate). One side displays the image of Our Lady of the Rosary (also, Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary), or la Virgen del Rosario. The Virgin stands on a crescent moon and hold the Christ child with her left arm. The child holds an image of the world with a surmounted cross. Both he and the Virgin support golden crowns. The Lady holds a rosary in her extended right hand. Her robe is red and her mantle is blue with gold stars and gilt edging. This particular image is very similar to a Colonial painting of the same personage at the Sanctuary of Slate (Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Las Lajas) in Colombia. The other side depicts a rare version of Archangel Michael in full metal body armor and holding a red baton. External “garters” at the knees take the form of human faces. He holds a blue shield with a wide, gilt edge and displays large white wings. The paintings of all figures are charming and primitive. Copious amounts of thick, heavily granulated gold paint (classic brilliant gold color not apparent in the photos) adorn both images. Approximate Age: Late 19th century to early 20th century. Our best estimate is circa 1920. Please refer to the ANDESAMAZON "DATING" TERMS. Materials: Silver, glass, metal, natural (?) paints. Approximate Size: The oval frame is 1 3/4-inches by 1 3/8-inches. The total length including the suspension bail is 1 15/16-inches. Condition: EXCELLENT, well-worn and used condition. The exterior frame exhibits stains, tarnish and shallow dents here and there. The painted metal plates show microscopic abrasions in places and evidence of exposure. The paint has extremely light crazing and cracking in places. The colors are rich and pleasant. Please refer to the photos.

We know that through mutual respect conflicts will subside. We know that by understanding our differences we can help one another. We believe that our Mother Earth and our Universe can provide unlimited resources for every man, woman and child to live in peace, happiness and love. As stewards of the human race, we have an intrinsic responsibility to do what we can to improve our world as much as possible. The majority of human existence has been dominated by so-called “Native” groups, also known as tribal folk, original residents, indigenous people, aboriginals, First Nations, traditional ethnicities, autochthonous societies, autochthonal cultures, et. al. At some point, of course, our ancestors were the same… regardless of current culture, creed or color. Regrettably, in the past half a millennium, thousands of unique tribal groups have disappeared due to misunderstanding, impudence and ethnocentrism. The direct and circuitously destruction of myriad native cultures, each a once-valuable resource to our planet, is due to uncontrolled aspects of colonialism, capitalism, racism and politicization. Of the nearly 7000 languages currently spoken on our planet, over 6000 are in immediate danger of becoming extinct. The vast majority of those are ethnic indigenous. We believe in cherishing and carefully supporting the very few “Native” groups that remain on earth. Unfortunately, we are on the brink of losing our connection with indigenous spirit, wisdom and traditional knowledge. For those whose customs have vanished, our window into their worlds is only available through literature, paintings, photographs, a few recordings and material culture, or the objects they created. For more than a quarter century those of us behind AKATAKSA/ANDESAMAZON have dedicated our professional interests to documenting “traditional” South American indigenous cultures, especially through their material culture. Our field studies have led us to some of the remotest living people on the continent. We have witnessed Native Americans existing exactly as their ancestors did in prehistoric times… and others who have jumped from 18th century existence to 21st century reality in the blink of an eye. Our ethnographic investigations have resulted in valuable data related to linguistics, cultural history, ethno-environmental relationships, socio-cultural organization, cosmology, mythology, spirituality and of course, material culture. We have a detailed proposal for a magnificent cultural center aimed at stimulating interest in past and present indigenous cultures. Our unique idea is not just to show beautiful objects on display. Ours is to share the entire background of a piece, not only from a scientific or scholarly point of view but also from a cultural and spiritual perspective as well. This holistic approach to understanding indigenous material culture shall include accompanying photographs, films, recorded testimonials, music, related specimens and even field notes. We want to inspire our visitors to continue their own investigations into realms of mysterious phenomena that we really know very little about. Apart from receiving monies for researching indigenous material culture, our sales contribute toward expanding interest in past cultures and ways of life. Not only can beautiful and interesting objects enhance ones´ personal environment, but they can also provide invaluable knowledge regarding different ideologies, unique ways of life and past or nearly extinct traditions. We encourage every buyer to intimately study each piece and learn as much as possible about its origin, function, importance and spiritual history. We hope that you share with companions, friends and especially children whatever understanding, knowledge and insights you obtain from our objects. In this small way, we feel inspired in preserving something of native cultures and making the world a better place. Thank you for working with us. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST AND SUPPORT
