This auction is for an original early antique Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) professionally framed hand-colored lithograph small folio print published in the pre-Ives era of 1838–1856. The lithograph is marked as follows: WM PENN’S TREATY WITH THE INDIANS WHEN HE FOUNDED THE PROVINCE OF PENNSA. 1661. THE ONLY TREATED THAT NEVER WAS BROKEN. LITH. & PUB. BY N. CURRIER. 2 SPRUCE ST. N.Y. N. SARONY. Please note that we opened the frame to remove a small piece of paper that had been left in place between the glass and the print and used the opportunity to inspect the lithograph. The lithograph measures roughly 14 1/16“ x 10” overall with an image size of 12 1/2” x 8 1/16”. It is rear-hinged to the matte with tape. The lithograph has aging, discoloration, yellowing, wrinkles, creases, scratches, nicks, fading, dirty and/or stained areas, and a tear and hole on the upper lefthand top border area of the print (see pictures). Despite these flaws we are of the opinion that this is one of the finest examples of any of the subject and era we have seen. There were three versions of this print published by Nathaniel Currier, though this version is unique in that it is the only one of the three that reverses the horizontal orientation of the original 1771 Benjamin West painting titled “The Treaty of Penn with the Indians.” The painting immortalized the legend of the signing of the Treaty of Shackamaxon, depicting William Penn and his delegation meeting with the Lenape Delaware Indians at the site where they crowned their family and clan chiefs under the shade of an ancient tree that would become known to history as the Treaty Elm. A reoriented variant of the painting first appeared just a few years after the original (and many times thereafter) when John Boydell published the reversed engraving by John Hall in London in 1775. This alternate view can also be found in the much beloved 1830 folk art painting by Edward Hicks. The Hall reverse orientation with its longer title was adopted by Currier and was likely offered concurrently to the other two West-oriented editions he published (Conningham “Currier & Ives Prints” numbers 6698 and 6699; Gale Research “Currier & Ives: A Catalogue Raisonne” numbers 7295 and 7296). We found similarly shifted editions from competitors of the era including those printed by lithographers James Virtue and James S. Baillie, the latter of whom learned his craft from Nathaniel Currier in the mid-1840s. Our version is also the only one of the Currier editions to bear the in-plate signature of Napoleon Sarony (1821–1896) who engraved it while working for Currier between 1838–1843. Incidentally Sarony would also take the knowledge he gained from Currier to himself compete with his former employer from 1843–1867, after which he really made his mark by establishing himself as one of the era’s leading portrait photographers over the last three decades of his life. James Merritt Ives (1824–1895) was hired by Currier in 1852 and so greatly impacted the business that he was offered a full partnership in 1857. Currier & Ives was born and would thrive through to the latter’s death in 1895. The sons of both men continued on with the business until ultimately it was liquidated in 1907. We believe that the lithograph was framed fairly recently. The frame has two labels attached to the rear that read in part as follows: CONGRATULATIONS. YOU CARE ENOUGH TO SELECT MUSEUM GLASS BY TRU VUE. MUSEUM GLASS PROVIDES 98% UV PROTECTION TO HELP PROTECT YOUR ART AGAINST DAMAGE AND FADING CAUSED BY INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LIGHT SOURCES. CUSTOM FRAMING BY FRAME-ABLES. 111 THOREAU ST. CONCORD, MA 01742. The frame measures roughly 20 11/16" x 17 7/8" x 13/16". The frame has an attached hanging wire as well as hanging hardware and rubber wall protectors affixed to the back on the bottom corners. The frame appears to be made of wood and is nicely designed with a generous inline matte. The frame has scratches, edge wear, nicks, dings, bumped corners, and manufacturing imperfections but appears to be free of any breaks, cracks, or repairs. The framed lithograph weighs roughly 3 lbs 12.5 oz.
