This highly collectible and rare Omega 321 vintage chronograph reference 2279-1 was Fully Serviced by Master Horologist ClockSavant in late 2018. Because of the watch’s black dial, silver markers, and silver hands, it is an unusual and interesting example of an Omega 321 vintage chronograph. If you know anything about watches, you know that the 321 is one of the most icon...ic movements in watchmaking history, and this was one of the first watches to use it when it was introduced in the 1940s. It’s even being re-introduces this year by Omega—here’s what they write: “It was the very first movement ever fitted to the iconic and highly collectable Speedmaster (which debuted in 1957), Omega watches that featured this iconic and discontinued movement (replaced by the Calibre 861) later increased in value and desirability.
In addition to the Speedmaster, the Omega Caliber 321 (which was based on the Lemania CH27) was also used in early Seamaster chronographs – as well as a variety of other timepieces throughout the years (often under different names), and variations can be found inside pieces by Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin. Due to its prevalence and important position within the history of wrist-mounted chronographs, collectors have come to prize the Caliber 321 as a true icon of mechanical watchmaking.”
As shown in the pictures, this vintage watch is beautiful and exudes a combination of an aviator feel with classic 1940’s elegance. He did not refinish the dial, but it was likely refinished sometime in the past, which was common practice for well cared-for watches. The dial shows very slight discoloration but is otherwise flawless.
