Joan Mitchell (1926-1992) authentic painting oil on canvas circa 36 x 48 inches taken off stretcher, signed lower right "Joan Mitchell" probably painted circa 1965; Mitchell is one of the most important abstract expressionist artists; her average price for oil on canvas is circa $2.5 million and her high price is several pieces between $10 to $15 million; she painted in New York with the other abstract expressionists but c. 1959 she moved to Paris and spent much of her working life in ...Paris but was often back in New York City; Provenance Samuel Kootz; it is not well understood but the 4 most important art dealers of abstract expressionism were (1) Peggy Guggenheim (but she moved from New York City to Venice circa 1947 (so she was out of the picture)(in 1943 Peggy Guggneheim exhibited Jackson Pollock paintings and the average price was $150 (HARD TO BELIEVE) AND IN HER 1960 MEMOIRS GUGGENEHIM SAID THE MOST MONEY SHE EVER RECEIVED FOR A POLLOCK WAS $1, 000 (of course she donated fantastic pieces to museums for free); (2) Betty Parsons (all of Guggenheim's artists went to either Parsons or Kootz)(Parsons had her 4 horsemen (1) Pollock; (2) Rothko (3) Barnet Newman; and (4)Still but Parsons was much smaller than Kootz (Kootz was the dealer for Picasso from c. 1947 to 1948 and also sold Picassos later); (3) Sidney Janis was probably the biggest abstract expressionist dealer but in 1962 Rothko, Guston, Gottlieb and Motherwell all left Sidney Janis (De Kooning stayed) because Janis was showing too many Pop art paintings; (4) so this leaves Samuel Kootz (who never showed Pop Art) but was the biggest promoter of abstract expressionism; Kootz Gallery closed 1966 and c. 1972 Kootz sent a large collection of abstract work to California.
