PIECE COMES WITH PROVENANCE!
From the historic estate of the famous Harold Brown (family namesake Brown University) on Belleview Ave. Newport, RI. Otherwise known as the Slocum Mansion. This family was considered one of the elite 400 of the gilded age!! This home was occupied by one of Newports last grand dames Eileen Slocum for more than 50 years where she entertained many former presidents and political figures!!
The original owners Harold and Georgette Sherman Brown sold the estate to Georgette's niece Eileen and John J. Slocum. John J. Slocum was a diplomat who served in Egypt, Germany, Asia, South America and many other locations. Mr. Slocum was appointed by President Reagan to the Presidential Cultural Property Advisory Committee, and was also a Trustee Emeritus of the Archaeological Institute of America. John was an avid collector of important Asian and Egyptian artifacts. He also donated what's considered to be the definitive James Joyce collection to the Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale in 1951, as well as an Ezra Pound collection in 1983.
Another immediate family member Steven L. Himmedieu Slocum was a military attache to Russia during World War I and contributed to the family collection with Russian pieces from his associate Tsar Nicolas II, as well as from his travels.
This family lineage includes Eileen's father in law Colonel H.J. Slocum whose historical accounts are written in the book The General and the Jaguar: Pershings Hunt For Poncho Villa: A True Story. Colonel H.J. Slocum was at Fort Beaufort when Sitting Bull decided to surrender and was an active participant in the exchange of weapons surrendered. During his duties indian Lone Wolf pulled out his own weapon from the pile and gave it to Slocum as a gift. Slocum also participated in military campaigns against the Sioux, Nez Perce, Cheyenne, and Apache. He fought in the Spanish American war as well as in the Phillipines serving as commander of the Guardia Rural in U.S. occupied Cuba. This carried over to appointment of Fort Columbus during the raid by Pancho Villa.
