Original Description:
For sale is a rare 19th century Divination Tray made by the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria. This tray was used by a diviner to contact Ifa, god (orisha) or oracle of wisdom and knowledge. The face represents the god (orisha) Eshu who supervises the divination rite. Flour or cornmeal or such is dusted on the tray surface and patterns would be marked in the dusting with a pointed tool and the patterns would then be “read” by the diviner. This piece is 17” tall and 17” wide and ...about 1 1/2” wide though it was hand done with primitive tools so the width is not exact. The back is plain with the exception of a hand carved square indentation. This will look amazing on any wall and is from a well established Rhode Island collection of African art and is for sale for the first time in generations.
