Antique Solid Silver Patent Vesta Case Cigar Cutter Horse Racing Interest 1905 Click image to enlarge Description Please scroll down for lots more photos An antique Edwardian solid sterling silver vesta case / cigar cutter combination by Horton & Allday with full English hallmarks for Birmingham 1905 - 06 : the case with the 'Sirus' patent (presumably for the unusual plaster type striker) and the cutter with 'The Unity Patent'.
The rectangular case has a plaster type striking panel and a hinged lid with a bale and an integral cigar cutter : the button at one end of the lid presses down to release the sprung cutter, a cigar tip is placed in the top hole, and the cutter is pushed forward to cut the tip - please see all 20 photos and .
The case is engraved to the front 'Raeberry 1907' - Raeberry was the Duke of Montrose's horse in the 1907 Ayr Gold Cup (Until 1907 the race was run over one mile three furlongs. That changed to the current six furlongs after the course moved to its present site. It was claimed the reason for the change in distance was to give the Duke of Montrose’s Raeberry a better chance of winning the race. That plan didn’t work with Charis winning in 1907).
