Original Description:
This document dated 1812, an appointment for Humphrey Jackman, appointed as Justice of Peace for Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Signed at lower right by Governor William Plumer, left and bottom by Samuel Sparhawk and Ithamar Chase. Document is 12x15, folds, toned, overall good condition.William Plumer (June 25, 1759 – December 22, 1850) was an American lawyer,  Baptist lay preacher, and politician from Epping, New Hampshire. He is most notable ...for his service as a Federalist in the United States Senate (1802–1807), and Governor of New Hampshire as a Democratic-Republican (1812–1813, 1816–1819).In 1803, Plumer was one of several New England Federalists to propose secession from the United States because of the lack of power by Federalists, the rising influence of Jeffersonian Democrats, and the diminished influence of the North since the Louisiana Purchase. Recalling his involvement in the secession scheme in 1827, Plumer said, "This was, I think, the greatest political error of my life: & would, had it been reduced to practise [sic], instead of releiving [sic], destroyed New England.... Fortunately for my own reputation the erroneous opinion I formed produced no bitter fruits to myself or my country."[Sparhawk, Samuel (1777-1834) Cashier, Concord Bank, 1807-1810, 1814-1826....Secretary, State of New Hampshire, 1810-14, 1816-1825....1st Lieutenant, The Company of Volunteers, Concord, 1814....Treasurer, New Hampshire Historical Society, 1825-1830....Presidential Elector, 1829....Sandemanian.Ithamar Chase was born in 1762 in Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts to Dudley and Alice Corbett Chase. He was baptized there 27 September 1762. Unfortunately, Ithamar's subsequent investment in the glass industry failed, and he left his family an insolvent estate at his death in 1817.It is of special significance that his child Salmon Portland Chase had a noteworthy career in politics. Further notoriety came with the naming of Chase Manhattan Bank in his honor. What follow are a few of Salmon's accomplishments: 6th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; 25th Secretary of the Treasury; 23rd Governor of Ohio; and United States Senator from Ohio, 1849-1855 and 1860.Please view the other historical and Civil War related documents I'll be listing this week.SEE SCAN.I now accept PAYPAL but PREFER other forms of traditional paper payment.
