Very rare antique Chinese She Yen (歙砚) carved ink pot. Circa QingQianlong Reign (1711-1799).The liddedink pot is very heavy. It has a short bulbous body and a straight round base.The lidis plain on the outside and has an exquisite floral design hand carved on theinside.Animperial Qianlong seal carved on the base of the ink pot.She Yenis a stone found at the Yellow Mountain in Anhui Province. It was one of mostfamous stone for making ink pot/ ink well in China.The specialtyof She Ye...n is its dark colour on the outside and the lighter colour on theinside. Many She Yen have carvings on them.This isan interesting She Yen with the carving on the inside of the lid. On theoutside it is plain and on the inside is this exquisite floral pattern. It wasmade to suit Chinese scholar’s ascetic taste.Theseal on the base is also interesting. It is an imperial seal with the QianlongReign carved on it. The seal doesn’t have the word ‘Made’ hence the belief thatit was an imperial seal.I wasvisiting the Yellow Mountain in the early 1990s and found this wonderful inkpot. It was hard to get to the top of the mountain and with my age and weight Ihad to be carried by two sinewy young men on a sedan chair.Thisink pot is extremely heavy at more than half a kilogramme. It has aninteresting tactile feel and an air of superiority about it.I havehad this for almost 30 years. I just scraped out the dried ink on the insidelast week. It still has some dried ink in it and if you do win this item pleasedo not use anything rough to clean it.
