Overall ConditionFair Additional Information: This interesting mask with its simple but expressive forms, reflects its mixed history and heritage. It comes from Tanzania, a huge country whose arts are as divers...e as the population.The complex pattern of different ethnic groups and an equally great diversity of cultures are experienced from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria to the Indian Ocean. Along the coast, the influence of Islam is present, contrasting with the traditional Bantu culture of the interior. This common Bantu heritage shapes the diverse art forms of the many people of Tanzania. The present mask that is identified with similar attributes is noted to be in use among the Sukuma, Nyamwezi and Zigua people. This one with the elongated face with a long ridge-like nose, round eyes, and square mouth also has large ears each with two earrings is most likely from the Sukuma. This is a good example of this simple but strong style of mask carving with inset wooden teeth. Geometry plays a prominent role in the sculpting of the 'u' shaped ears, square mouth and small rounded eyes and triangular nose.
