Planetary Achondrite, MartianPoikilitic Shergottite (Peridotitic - Lherzolitic)Specimen is a 5.87g full slice
(Origin Craig Zilmen)
*Poikilitic texture refers to igneous rocks where large component crystals contain smaller crystals of other minerals within them. In poikilitic rocks, the contained smaller crystals are termed 'chadacrysts' (here the olivine, the shock darkened crystal...s) and the larger phenocrysts are termed 'oikocrysts' (here the pyroxene, apple green colored).
The paired meteorite NWA 13367 have been described accordingly by its classifier (Carl Agee, University of New Mexico) as structurally poikilitic indeed, but he went to submit them to the Nomenclature Comittee of the Meteoritical Societyn as describing the proposed nature of the rock as well : *peridotitic
*Peridotite is a dense, coarse-grained mostly mantelic igneous rock consisting predominatly of the minerals olivine and pyroxene. Peridotite is ultramafic, as the rock contains less than 45% silica. It is high in magnesium (Mg2+), reflecting the high proportions of magnesium-rich olivine, with appreciable iron. Peridotite is derived from the mantle of a planetary parent body, either as solid blocks and fragments, or as crystals accumulated from magmas that formed in the mantle.
