One of the 25 agencies listed on the chart, NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, would evolve into NASA, and Webb, a former corporate lawyer and executive, would be named its Administrator by President Kennedy. He remained in that position for seven years at the height of the Space Race with the Soviet Union. Called by his biographer “The Man Who Ran the Moon”, Webb would oversee the Apollo program while building NASA into a giant agency of public preeminence, until he felt compelled to resign – just nine months before the Lunar Landing - after the accidental death of the crew of Apollo 1.
Webb's reputation as America’s most powerful “Space boss” was restored after his death, the second American Space Telescope, after Hubble, being named in his memory.
Webb's letters are now considered rarities of Space memorabilia.
